The device’s storage capacity shown on the box and in any advertisements is its total storage capacity and in fact does exist in the device. The total storage capacity is divided into internal storage and phone storage and may be signified with different names like “Device Storage”, “Internal Storage”, “SD Storage”, “Phone Storage”or in some cases both the partitions would have the same name depending upon which device you are using.
A part of the storage capacity is used to make sure your device is running at optimal performance levels and the remaining storage is divided into 2 parts:
Internal Storage*
This is the memory available to you for installing your applications (the operating system ones) and data. Applications are installed in this storage and your personal data such as text messages, contact lists, your email settings and the likes are stored on this. This is considered to be quite sensitive information and this is not accessible to you. This memory is reserved for your operating system and personal data as earlier mentioned.
Phone Storage*
This is the storage that is available to you. This is the storage that you get from the total internal storage capacity of the device. Your games and applications can be installed in this partition if you choose to*** or you can transfer non system applications from your internal memory partition to this partition. It is the default memory for storing your pictures, movies, songs and so on. You can access it when you connect your device to the computer.
* the partition name may be signified with different names like “Device Storage”, “Internal Storage”, “SD Storage”, “Phone Storage” or in some cases both the partitions would have the same name depending upon which device you are using.
** You can choose to install some third party applications like Link2SD etc to manage your applications on the internal storage.
